What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is natural state of "mind, with numerous beneficial characteristics ." We all have the ability to enter in "trance" state of mind. Some people can enter deep trance more easily than others, but everyone is capable of entering this level of trance. Each of us has a conscious mind and a subconscious mind. The conscious mind is the part of you that you're aware of, the part of you that does your thinking. Your subconscious mind is the domain of your emotions. That's where your beliefs and memories are stored, as well as all your perceptions, learnings, and habits. It's the part of the mind that we automatically use in our everyday lives but we're not always aware of it. In short, Hypnosis allows us to open the subconscious mind to positive suggestions while the conscious mind is occupied or distracted.
What Hypnosis is NOT? Many people have concerns or worries about hypnosis based on misconceptions they have. These misconceptions may be based on things they might have seen on TV, in the movies, or in stage shows. Listed below are some common misconceptions, and the actual facts about hypnosis.
Misconception 1: The person being hypnotized will be under the control of the hypnotist, and can be made to do or say anything the hypnotist wants. Fact 1: This is not true. No matter how deeply hypnotized you become, YOU will remain in control throughout the session. You cannot be made to do anything you do not want to do or anything that you are uncomfortable doing.
Misconception 2: People become trapped in hypnosis and “cannot come out” of it when they want to. Fact 2: This is not true. People can end hypnosis whenever they want.
Misconception 3: People have to be very “hypnotizable” “suggestible” or “gullible” for hypnosis to work. Fact 3: This is not true. Research has indicated that the vast majority of people can benefit from hypnosis. Furthermore, being hypnotizable or choosing to be responsive to suggestions means only that you have the ability to use hypnosis effectively. It is not at all related to being gullible or weak-willed.
Misconception 4: During hypnosis, people are unconscious. Fact 4: This is not true. During hypnosis, people are not asleep or unconscious. Although they may feel very relaxed.
Are you aware that the average person goes through hypnosis at least twice a day? It's true! You may not know this, but you've already been hypnotized. Believe it or not, you likely enter an hypnotic stateat least twice a day. Common examples include arriving at your destination without memory of driving there, zoning out while reading the page of a book, becoming so engrossed in the television show you’re binging that you barely realize half a day has passed, or experiencing involuntary sleep Hypnosis.
